I’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazingly talented people. Here’s what some of them have to say about working with me.

When it comes to science communication, Gaius is a true “unicorn,” bringing together backgrounds in art and science to create eye-catching and informative images. He produced graphics for the 2018 issues of Act Against Cancer, the UA Cancer Center donor magazine, collaborating on their conceptualization, spearheading the necessary background research, and seeing them through the production process. He was very easy to work with on revisions, offering insight into keeping information scientifically accurate while striving to keep language accessible to the general public. All of this with a keen eye to aesthetics.

Gaius also produced several infographics for the UA Cancer Center website, adding an extra dimension to the stories we were sharing with our audience. They really made our website “pop”!

With very few resources, Gaius was able to put together a video and two animations for the UA Cancer Center website. Taking our stories in a multimedia direction was very exciting, and I appreciated the talent and expertise he brought to the table. The video project involved interviewing 14 physicians and scientists. Gaius took the lead on setting up the space and cameras, and miking and lighting all subjects. He often asked insightful follow-up questions during the interviews. Using transcripts, he helped put scripts together and did all the editing, including correcting sound and inserting background music. In the first three months, the video received 1.3K views on Facebook and 41 “likes,” which exceeds our average response by far.

The two animations, which accompanied press releases, illustrated complex scientific concepts for a general audience. He worked with me to ensure accessibility to a general audience and with the scientists to ensure accuracy. One of these animations was used by the local news.

I received many compliments from other communication professionals who had seen his work in our press releases, magazine, and website, and were impressed by what Gaius contributed to our small unit. He made us look very good.

Overall, I found Gaius to be responsive, prompt, and flexible — an absolute joy to work with. He would enhance any team lucky enough to have him.

  • Graphical abstract

I am very impressed with Gaius’s skills as an artist, scientist, and communicator. If you’re looking for someone who can understand your vision and turn your ideas into an eye-catching graphic, I can’t recommend him enough. I’m a geologist who needed a graphical abstract for a scientific paper. I made one myself, but it was missing the pop and depth that I knew a real artist could bring. I sent my graphic to Gaius and he turned into something better than I was hoping for. Because Gaius is also a scientist, he was able to quickly understand everything I wanted to display even though we are in very different fields. He checked in with me every step of the way to make sure we were both on the same page – I felt heard, understood, and blown away by what he created.

Infographic Project

As the student representative of our Physiology program’s executive committee, I am continuously searching for resources and opportunities that would benefit student learning and professional development. After seeing Gaius’ infographics, I realized it would be great if we could develop a custom workshop together to teach students how to disseminate their research to the public in an engaging, accessible manner and gain fluency in Adobe Illustrator.

Gaius worked with us to tailor a two-part workshop series that would cater to the needs of our students as they, in general, had zero experience with using Adobe Illustrator or creating an infographic. Knowing this, Gaius came to the workshop fully prepared with worksheets, visuals, powerpoints, and scheduled periodic interactive sessions where we could exercise the material learned during his oral/visual presentations. Throughout the presentation, he stopped regularly to answer questions, pose questions to the students and provide examples to illustrate design and organization concepts. He also made himself available to students outside of the workshop times to provide additional assistance.

The workshop itself was very popular and warranted a waiting list. Of the students that were able to attend, the feedback we received was excellent. Students felt they received instruction that was useful to them. In the future, we hope to have Gaius return and give the workshop again and this time make it a three-part series to give students more time to complete their infographic design as we learned navigating Adobe Illustrator for the first time was time-consuming for students due to its complexity.

Our only regret is that we didn’t think of developing this workshop and recruiting Gaius sooner because beyond infographics, the utility of Illustrator is that you can use it for manuscripts and presentations to draw custom models and signaling pathways. Any visuals you can use to aid the communication of your scientific findings is critical when explaining complex phenomena. The consensus was that the workshop was successful in teaching doctoral students valuable skills in summarizing findings and illustrating them in a creative manner.

  • Emoji Set

I had the chance to collaborate on some graphic designs with Gaius this year and not only did his final work blow me away, his entire approach to the project did. Even though this was a small effort in terms of billing for him, he spent the time to fully understand my requirements, offered regular status updates and over-delivered on the final work. I look forward to my next opportunity to have him create for me because I know it will be just as inspiring.
